The fossil remains of fishes dating back 14 thousand years ago were found in a cave in Calabria and the DNA of the "Flintstones" Trout was sequenced thanks to a study coordinated by Professor Vincenzo Caputo Barucchi, University of Marche and partner of the Life+ Trout project.
The study helped to reconstruct the genetic changes of these fishes that once lived in the Mediterranean Sea.
"We have analyzed the DNA of trout samples from the late Pleistocene - said prof. Barucchi to ANSA agency - in a time of...

During the first half of 2016 the activities of the Life + TROUT project continued including several different concrete actions, such as obtaining fertilized eggs, and restocking in the targeted sites. Also, the flow of water courses involved in the reintroduction was monitored, thus enabling the development of the first model for the estimation of environmental flow suitable for the survival of macrostigma trout.

Specifically, these are the main points of the activities implemented in recent months:

The concrete activities of macrostigma trout conservation are still ongoing, thanks to several researches in the field carried out by project partners. In fact, between the first and second project years 486 wild trout were sampled. These were photographed, marked with different colored elastomers (according to the basin of origin) and fitted with a microchip with an individual code.

Each specimen was subjected to genetic analysis and placed in a 500-...

In particular, the main actions carried on in recent months were:
    - Capture and selection of pure wild broodstock, as part of the C2 conservation action. Between mid-November and early December 2015, 260 adult specimens were taken from the genetically intact populations, identified during the A2 preparatory action. Compared to 2014, about 40 specimen more were sampled in order to...
